What if the enemy of our souls contrived for us to win a political victory, in order to checkmate us into lives of compromise & complacency?
The Abortion Discussion
Whilst attending Parliament on January 27, 2019 I listened to a Member of Parliament, sitting on a Committee hearing submissions on the issue of legalizing abortion in Jamaica, say, “I hear you persons from the pro-life position. But you are the same ones who come to me for an abortion when your daughter gets pregnant”. The truth of his statements cut me. Cut me to the core.
Following a conversation with a friend a question rang in my heart. What if the devil was ok with abortion remaining illegal in my nation if it allowed hypocrisy, compromise and complacency within the Church to continue?
I can almost hear him saying, “Keep protesting. Keep writing. Keep petitioning.”
“But do not pray. Don’t allow your heart to be broken. Don’t practice what you preach. Separate your beliefs from your life. Reject the orphan and the teen-mother. Preserve your reputation and comfort above all else”.
“The education of your daughter is more important than the life in her womb. It will ruin her life and it will ruin your life. Everyone will know that she’s having sex outside of wedlock”.
“This is different- it’s not really ‘abortion’. God will understand”.
“Stay inside your church, make it a prison. Don’t transform your community and nation with the truth of the Gospel lived out. Abortion is wrong- but not unthinkable, or unjustifiable. Stay in compromise. Hate being found out more than the sin itself”.
And then I hear him, when we, the body of Christ, buy into those lies, laugh insidiously and say,
Freedom from Personal Compromise
This imagined scene made me think of other areas in our personal lives where we may be tempted to embrace external victory and internal failure. Outwardly appearing triumphant, while our inner lives were in shambles; we chose to remain bound by secret addictions, shame, resentment, pride, rage, insecurities, fear, and confusion. How often have we given in to the temptation to choose the appearance of holiness over the process of sanctification (always harder and far messier)?
Our Lord requires more than “bumper sticker Christianity”. He is coming back for a radiant, glorious Church who doesn’t love her own sin, life and comfort more than Him, but rather chooses daily to die to herself. A church that defends the weak, restores the broken, and lives a life wide open (not caught in the middle ground of hypocrisy).
A Life Laid Down
We can believe the Lord for this! We will be victorious! We will triumph over the accuser of the brethren by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony- our testimony of the truth of who Jesus is played our lives practically. We will not hang on to our lives because, they will be laid down.
May we know and share God’s heart for our wholeheartedness, the unborn child and the woman with no husband (teen mom). May the enemy not deceive us into false religion, and slogan filled compromise.
“True religion is this, to look after the orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by this wicked generation.” (James Chapter 1, Verse 27)
