I think we all can, at some point in our lives, wrestle with the question, “Am I enough?”
Is what I am doing enough? Is who I am enough? Am I good enough, smart enough, earn enough, love enough, and the list goes on. Enough!
If we are not careful, we can fall into the trap of leaning on our self and our self-efforts and achievements as a benchmark of thinking we are enough.
“If I do this, or achieve that, or be like that, or gain that person’s approval, only then will I be enough.”
More than enough with Christ
On our own, we aren’t enough.
We are human; we falter and fail and if we are relying on our own strength, we will keep wrestling with this notion of being enough and doing enough. Always trying to reach this misconstrued idea of perfection.
Instead, God’s way is to rely on him and his strength in life instead of relying on our self and our own strength.
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”” (2 Corinthians chapter 12 verse 9a)
What an instant release of peace and comfort this brings. It is like a vast ocean that can come wash over us, filling in any of our human gaps we may have.
“Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
(2 Corinthians chapter 12 verse nine (b)
I don’t think this means to slacken off or neglect our responsibilities, as I believe God wants us to do whatever we need to do with excellence and with our whole hearts. But I believe it is more about realising how much we need Him every step of the way, in each moment of the day.
I AM who HE says I am
So, with Christ, we are more than enough. Even if sometimes we don’t ‘feel’ like we are. We need to learn to trust God more than we trust our human thoughts and feelings.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” (1 Peter chapter 5, verse 6)
He promises an abundant life; we need to trust him that he knows best.
We need to know who He says we are so on days when we are feeling not enough, we can confidently say, “With God I am more than enough and with Him I can do all things.”
