The Atheist Foundation of Australia has requested citizens to refrain from listing 'Jedi' as their religion in the country's upcoming census on August 9.
According to the Brisbane Times, around 58,000 people had put "Jedi" as their religion in 2006, which jumped to 64,390 on the 2011 census.
The Atheist Foundation of Australia is running a campaign to curb the practice by the Star Wars fans.
According to the group, the trend is making Australia seem more religious than it actually is, adding that when the statistics are officially counted, 'Jedi' gets classified as a "Not Defined" religion instead of "No Religion."
"Unfortunately I think the Jedi joke is a bit old," AFA president, Kylie Sturgess told Newsbeat. "I've put it down myself in the past, and now we're calling on people to take the census a bit more seriously."
That trend is had reportedly worried the AFA because this affects the atheist population of Australia as the government charts more people as religious and they aim policies and tax dollars accordingly.
"One thing that we do know about the census is that it's used to decide all sorts of things, from planning education facilities and hospitals, to allocating time slots on public radio and television," she explained.
The 'religion' Jedi began in the UK, where around 0.7% of the population elected it as their belief in 2011.
