In the work to encourage its readers to understand the Gospel, Rvd. Johnson listed three main points to strengthen the Christian faith within Australians. There were:
The first point was to read and learn the word of God, Rvd. Johnson said. The Bible is our only sure and infallible guide. It was given by the inspiration of God. He stated there were no other books, however good and useful, which are perfect since it was composed by humans (2 Tim. 8-16; Isa. viii. 20). This was a sacred book, he said, because it contained all that we need to make us wise unto salvation. It is a manuscript to define our original image. From this book, we may learn the malignity of sin, the holiness, spirituality, extent, and sanction of the law of God; and consequently, the just and certain condemnation due to our disobedience.
He implored those who cannot read the Bible to find someone who could; in addition, he personally offered to read it to those who were illiterate. In a message which still resonates today, he cast strong doubts about the 'lack of time' people have in not reading the Bible. He said those who didn't have time had no inclination and willpower. He warned those who made these excuses would have to appear before God in judgement.
The second point, he urged, was for Christians to observe the Sabbath Day. As stated in the Bible and found in the Book of Exodus, this day must be treated with holiness and to neglect it was tantamount to 'absolutely despising God and to defy Him, as it were to His face.' Again, he warned those who deliberately break God's commands would be brought to an 'untimely and disgraceful end."
Lastly, he encouraged all Christians to pray. He taught people should humble themselves before God and asked for His many mercies. Furthermore, He should be praised and the person should pray for pardon and repentance. Finally, the person praying should ask Him to watch over your hearts, words, and actions, throughout the day, and that you may not be hindered or hurt by the snares and temptations around you.
On the 3rd February 2008, the 220th anniversary of the first Christian service on Australian soil will be celebrated. The National Alliance of Christian Leaders, in its email, described this as a great, significant, and landmark event to remind the current generation that Australia was built upon a Christian foundation.
