In Wigan, Blackpool played their first Premiership game in 40 years and shocked Wigan with many early attempts on goal. Blackpool's new striker Harwood scored a brace as Blackpool played fantastic football and outplayed Wigan throughout the match. You could even say the 4-0 win was a generous result for Wigan as Blackpool missed many opportunities. The tangerines were happy in the end as their 40 year wait was rewarded with a great day out for travelling fans.
At White Hart Lane Man City played out a thoroughly exciting 0-0 draw with Tottenham. Joe Hart was the winner with many fine saves to keep City in the game early. Hart who was unlucky not to play in South Africa showed why he is so highly regarded saving time and time again.
On Sunday Liverpool hosted Arsenal. Both teams looked desperate to avoid losing and a late blunder by Liverpool keeper Rainer gave the gunners a share in the spoils. Joe Cole marked his debut for Liverpool with a Red Card. He lunged in late and gave the referee little choice to end a disappointing day for Hodgsons men.
In other matches Aston Villa didn't show any signs of a hangover from Martin O'Neil's shock exit with a fine display dispatching of West Ham 3-0. Villa were sensational with Petrov, Downing and Milner all getting on the score sheet. Sunderland went 2-0 up early against Birmingham however went down to 10 men and surrendered their lead to draw 2-2. Fulham and Bolton played out a 0-0 draw in North Manchester while Wolves and Blackburn both secured maximum points with wins over Stoke and Everton respectively.
