Mr Mundine stance was supported by the Roman Catholic Bishop's Commission for Relations with Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders chairman, Archbishop of Perth, Barry Hickey, who said the government should express sorrow for the terrible things that had occurred to the Aboriginal people.
The Archbishop continued, telling a Brisbane Catholic news publication that he had publicly expressed sorrow for the Church involvement with the Aboriginals.
"In the past, I have publicly expressed sorrow for many things that happened in the Church's involvement with Aboriginal people, such as the absence of family ties, the loss of personal names, and the lack of involvement in the management of the missions," the archbishop said.
The Federal Indigenous Affair Minister, Jenny Macklin, indicated the Federal Government was willing to say sorry but ruled out any compensation for the stolen generation.
Meanwhile, the Australian Evangelical Alliance director, Tom Slater, has urged the minister to consult with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Alliance (NATSICA) which is broadly representative of the Indigenous Church that, in turn, can claim to represent the situation of a substantial portion of Australia's Indigenous people.
