In a moving demonstration of faith despite circumstances, hundreds of Christians in Haiti went to church on Sunday to offer prayers of gratitude in spite of the widespread destruction that surrounded them.
Many victims lost homes and family members in the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew, but this did not stop survivors from making their way to the damaged local churches. They trudged through the rubble to worship even without roofs over their head.
The Category 5 hurricane struck the tiny Carribean nation on the 4th of October, destroying almost everything in its path.
According to a report by CBN News, at least one of the churches was so badly damaged by the disaster that the worshippers had to set up an alter outside and offer their prayers there.
Elise Pierre, aged nearly 80 years, was one of the survivors. She went on to explain that she believed that it was nothing short of miracle that she and her loved ones survived. She wore a straw hat that nearly concealed a gash on her forehead, which was caused by a metal sheet that collapsed from the roof overhead.
Aside from Haiti, the Bahamas were also substantially affected by Hurricane Matthew.
Pastor Barbara L. Rahming, whose church was greatly damaged as the walls on both sides of the building were completely blown away, is still determined to keep her eyes on God.
"It's a disaster as far as the building is concerned. Everything is out, it's finished. We are trusting the Lord to make a way, and I know He will make a way, for all things work together for good," she said.
