Researchers found that most churchgoing Americans wouldn't skip service to watch football.
Vice-president of LifeWay Research Scott McConnell said, "Most churchgoers put divine revelation ahead of division rivalries."
Nashville-based LifeWay Research asked 994 churchgoers how strongly they agree or disagree with the statement "I would skip a weekly worship service in order to watch my favorite football team."
Only about 1 in 7 responded they would skip church in favor of enjoying a football match at home. Almost 70 percent said they "strongly disagree with the statement", showing a significant distaste for picking football over God.
Any differences between genders? About a quarter of male churchgoers say they are willing to skip church for football while only 10 percent of women agree.
Churgoers' attitude towards going to church versus rooting for their favorite football team varies however on the season. This especially happens when someone's team is performing well. Some churches around the country made adjustments on the service schedule to give way to football fans.
One example is Daniel Espy, pastor of The Bridge Church in Snohomish, Washington. A few years ago, Espy offered an 8 AM service specifically for Seahawks fans. This was during the time the Seahawks were playing a lot better than in previous football seasons.
"Honestly, we just try to show people that Jesus is better than football," Epsy stated.
