If you're curious about details concerning the fifth season of American Horror Story, then you need not look further than the first two episode of the series' fourth season Freak Show for clues.
Show creator Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Weekly in an interview that clues about the fifth season have actually been dropped in episodes "Monsters Among Us" and "Massacres and Matinees."
"There are clues in the first two episodes because I figured out season 5 very early on and I know that the fans love that. So there are clues that are dropped," he said.
Fans immediately played guessing games in social media, and shared their two cents' worth on the upcoming season, which really amused Murphy.
"I've been looking, and nobody has gotten it right," he simply said.
However, he did say that a scene from Freak Show, where Emma Roberts' character Maggie Esmeralda is handed a coffee cup with a top hat drawn into it is a big reveal about season 5.
It "is a big season five clue!" confirmed Murphy. "It's an arcane clue, but it's very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you'll be like, 'Oh!'"
A lot of people also guessed that season 5 will be related to aliens and space, which could connect to season 2's Asylum. But Murphy stressed that it is not the case.
"No. We're not doing space. Because space is not in America. It's American Horror Storynot Intergalactic Horror Story. But I thought the clues about people thinking it was space were clever," he said.
Murphy did express admiration and appreciation for fans who continually think out of the box as far as American Horror Story is concerned. "I always love it when people come up with these theories but it is 100 percent not space. It is land-bound and it takes place in the United States," he said.
