On the 18th May 2006, Compassion Australia in conjunction with 39 of Australian leading Christian broadcasters including Vision FM is launching a one day campaign to persuade Australia to sponsor a child. The compassion sponsorship is defined by them as ‘an expression of God’s love to a child.’
Compassion Australia is a Christian organisation based on the word of God where it aims to connect caring sponsors to children in need on a one to one basis. It does not operate by itself but rather it works through the numerous partnerships to release children from spiritual, economic, social, physical and emotional poverty. Finally Compassion partnering with local church aims to utilise God’s ordained instrument to evangelise communities and equipping church leaders/members to be more effective in ministering and advocating for children.
In all projects Compassion actively encourages parents/guardians of the children to participate in their programs and workshops.
Making a heart felt plea, the website is running a story on Amit Bag to spearhead the campaign.
It reads: Five-year-old Amit Bag (pictured) lives in a poor, semi-rural community on the fringes of Kolkata in north-eastern India. Amit has been waiting for a sponsor since July last year. Amit’s father runs a tiny shop, which earns the family a mere 1200 rupees a month: about $AU1.20 a day. It is not enough to live on. Without Compassion's assistance, Amit and his younger brother would often go hungry; they could not go to school; they would have barely any clothes.
Thanks to Compassion’s Unsponsored Children’s Fund, Amit is able to participate in activities at his local Compassion project. Without a sponsor however, he receives no letters, nor the love, encouragement or prayer support that sponsors offer. This makes Amit very sad. However Amit is just one of over 650 children who will find a sponsor through this year’s Compassion Day radio appeal on May 18.
