I believe there are some foundational steps that need to be worked through to allow God to lead my wife and I. These steps have been a necessary process before we can properly ascertain what we should do next.
My wife and I have to deal with the issues of sin and surrendering to God in order to clearly receive God's guidance.
In the book of Joshua we read the story of God's presence departing from the Israelites due to sin of only one man. God is very forceful in His response to Joshua about the sin in the camp, "I will not be with you any more unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction." Joshua 7:12b.
Sin is a dividing barrier. Thankfully I can say that my wife and I have received the redemption for our sin but we must still be obedient to repentance when God convicts us of wrongdoing.
Being open to God, no matter what He wants of my wife and me, is also a choice we need to make if we desire to clearly receive His guidance. This decision must be based on who He is, not our perception of who He is because if my wife and I do not understand that God only has the best thing in store for us, and will provide for everything we need, our mind can limit what we will hear of God's message to us.
The question I ask myself is whether I am open to His direction, no matter what He says? A comment, a mentor of mine once gave me, has stuck in my mind because it's a great perspective to have as I consider this question.
He said that our attitude as we pray about the future must always be an answer of 'yes Lord', even before we know what to do next. This attitude means our mind and will is surrendered to God before He speaks, so that when we feel God's guidance nothing will stop us from following through. That was very helpful to me.
After going through this process of repentance for sin and surrendering ourselves to God's will we are still faced with the mass of possibilities to serve God. S my wife and I read through the bible we saw God's call to minister to: children, the poor and needy, widows, to reach all nations with the gospel and the list can continue.
My wife and I have had people from around the world inviting us to join their particular ministry. Even as we explore one area of need this could quickly expand into another overwhelming list of potential locations and organisations to work with.
Sifting through the possibilities can be stressful, depending on outside factors such as when the decision has to be made, what family and friends are saying and not wanting to make the wrong choice.
The bottom line to this uncertainty is God has a plan for our family and He wants us to let us know what this is so we can fulfil the plan. Ephesians 2:10 says "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
This verse speaks to me about being created by God and designed to do good works. It says God has already mapped out what He wants me to do and has planned a path of good works for me to follow.
Similarly, in the first chapter of Jeremiah God speaks about the plans He has for Jeremiah's life and says these were orchestrated before he was even in the womb.
Discovering my own destiny has likely been a question humans have asked since our beginning. The bible gives a lot of different examples of how people have entered into the plans for their future e.g. Joshua served an apprenticeship under Moses and then handed the reins, Samuel was released by his mother into ministry, Solomon inherited his destiny from his father; Saul (later known as Paul) encountered Jesus while he was travelling and Peter was personally invited to join Jesus' team while he was doing what he thought was his destiny.
In seeking God for my future I can be assured God does have the best plan in store for our family, He wants to tell us what that plan is and He will provide everything we need to accomplish that plan.
In the bible, we read of many examples of God speaking to people and calling them into their destiny and this remains His desire today. As a Christian I can attest that being open to God's guidance for our future, and follow through with His prompting, will bring great witness to God and He shall receive the glory due to His name.
