The Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas-based extreme group, in a press statement, made a vitriolic attack on Mr. Ledger in his movie-acclaimed role as a gay cowboy in the 2005 film, 'Brokeback Mountain,' describing it as a 'sordid, tacky bucket of slime seasoned with vomit.'
"God hates the sordid, tacky bucket of slime seasoned with vomit known as Brokeback Mountain – and He hates all persons having anything to whatsoever to do with it."
On FOX news, the Church's spokeswoman, Shirley Phelps-Roper, explained the reason for picketing him was because he used the big screen to spread a message of lie by portraying that being gay is OK.
"He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it's OK to be gay," Ms Phelps-Roper said.
The president of the Baptist Union of Australia, Rev. Dr. Ross Clifford, has disavowed the local Baptist community from this group and said they rejected the group's action and found the picket to be inappropriate.
"The intention of Ms Shirley Phelps-Roper and other Westboro Baptist Church members to picket the memorial services was completely inappropriate, and their statements were increasingly extreme and counter-productive," he said.
Dr Clifford joined Pastor Mark Wilson, Director of Ministries for Western Australian Baptists, in saying that the thoughts and prayers of Australian Baptists were with Heath Ledger's family and friends in their grief and sadness at his tragic death.
The homophobic Church group is infamously known in the U.S. for picketing the nation's soldiers in their funeral service after being killed in Iraq.
