Mark Tronson first asked what factors in George's history had influenced his decision to stand for council election. He explained that the local newspaper ran stories on his community ministry, also mentioning his chaplaincy to the Cronulla Sharks Rugby League team which lasted 17 years from 1986.
George Capsis then gives some background about his Community Outreach ministry, which he describes as an all-encompassing ministry which covers people from homeless youth to parents who cannot cope. He mentioned with pride that Cronulla Sharks club members and players have supported these community activities.
The next question concerned the award that the famous Rugby League coach, the late Jack Gibson, had given Capsis.
"Jack Gibson had always been a great supporter and encourager of my role as chaplain to the Cronulla Sharks," he replied. "One week when the teams had slumped, Jack Gibson gave the Man of the Week Award to me."
George Capsis spent a lot of time in the gym with the Sharks players as he was the World Masters Weightlifting Champion. This gave rise to many ministry opportunities through general conversations.
He commented that it has been an eye opener being an elected Councillor for the Sutherland Shire, he notices, quite unexpectdedly, from previous reports, that the other Councillors are now much nicer to each other in meetings, because they are in the presence of a Christian minister.
Finally Mark asked George Capsis how his ministry experiences over these past 33 years have assisted him.
George explained that his many ministry exposures through evangelism, community outreach ministry, sports chaplaincy and being involved as an athlete in the World Masters Weightlifting has allowed him to make so many contacts, with many people wanting to speak with him.
These things have set George Capsis apart. Members of the community (such as the media, society leaders, sports stars, and general public) seek him out. This has provided many open doors for his ministry.
