A Russia-based organised cybercrime group, Carbanak Gang, famous for hacking seems to have breached the security of hundreds of computer systems at the software giant Oracle Corp. It has been reported that the hackers have compromised a customer support gateway for companies by using Oracle's MICROS point-of-sale credit card payment systems.
On probing the matter further, it was confirmed that a server linked with the Russian hackers accessed the customer support portal. It is being suspected that the hackers have stolen more than $1 billion from banks, hospitality firms and retailers over the past few years.
After the investigation, it is believed that the hackers seemed to have loaded the MICROS portal with some malware that went on to record customers' usernames IDs and passwords when they signed in.
The software giant, Oracle, has also confirmed the intrusion in an apology letter to MICROS customers. The letter said, "Oracle Security has found and addressed wicked code in MICROS systems." Further adding, it also confirmed that the company's other networks, services and cloud system have not been impacted.
As of now, the extent of the risk is not clear, but it has been said that businesses using the MICROS support portal should consider its data compromised. Oracle has asked all of its MICROS customers to change their respective account login passwords.
