“…Then you will know that I am the LORD.” (Ezekiel chapter 7, verses 1-9)
All throughout the Old Testament, we see this phrase that signifies the sovereignty of God and His unchanging character. He reminds us that all things serve a purpose and speak of His glory. When God speaks and says “I am…” it tells us many things, like when Moses had an encounter with Him on Horeb.
In Exodus 3:14, God met and spoke to Moses, yet he probably had only a suffice knowledge about God. It is in this encounter that his life was changed forever. Moses saw himself as a nobody, someone who had a language difficulty, but that was not how God saw him. He didn’t only come to know God on a personal level; He was used by God to bring glory to His name.
Let’s not forget that it was not Moses who brought the people out of Egypt and ended the slavery. He was not the one who saw and heard the people’s affliction. It was the good and sovereign God who knew all about these when the Israelites thought they had lost hope in the hands of the vicious Egyptians.
Moses was used by God, but He could have accomplished anything without Him. But why did He use him? It was His desire. I believe that God utterly desires to use people in His plans. He delights that we partake with Him because of our relationship with Him. He is a relational, personal, and loving Father. It is His pleasure that we journey with Him.
Knowing your purpose starts with knowing your Creator.
God has a purpose for everyone He has called and justified. Even when the world looks at us with no value, God believes otherwise. There is no single, born-again Christian who has no purpose, whose life has no meaning. God created the beasts of the Earth for a purpose, the same way that He created man to have a relationship with Him and find their purpose in Him.
Perhaps you’re still grappling for answers to what your purpose is. Moses didn’t know he had a calling before he encountered God. He was content working as a shepherd for his father-in-law for 40 years, yet with one single encounter, his life changed. What started to be an episode of throwing doubts for Moses ended up a complete turnaround of his destiny. God called him out, and he responded.
Respond to Him and see where your obedience will lead you.
Knowing your purpose starts with knowing who God is. It doesn’t start at having mere knowledge about Him. You have to take off your sandals like what Moses did as this symbolizes humility and reverence before God. Though you might be afraid and hesitant to take up the calling that God has for you, know that He is with you.
Simply believing that He is with you and not against you is more than enough to shatter all doubts and fear because He is true to His promises. He is God, so don’t be afraid. God can accomplish anything, but He desires that you become a part in His plans— that alone must put the confidence we need in our hearts.
He wants you to say “yes.” God didn’t use Moses because He was eloquent. He was aware of his speech problem, but He called Him anyway to display His all-sufficient grace and power. Man’s limitations don’t threaten Him nor limits what He can do. He can work on your difficulties and even in your uncertainties. You only must be willing.
