Two of the victims of the missing AirAsia flight were missionaries bound for Indonesia.
The two missionaries, Park Seong-beom and his wife Lee Kyung-hwa, were from Korea going back to their mission field in the town of Malang, in the eastern part of Java Island.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the couple were moving to Malang with their baby girl in order to teach computer skills as well as the Korean language to the natives there.
In the report, Mr. Park was sent by Yeosu First Presbyterian Church, in the southern part of Korea, while Lee was a missionary sent by her church in Seoul.
The couple had recently acknowledged their calling in the mission work, and they had just been in the Indonesian town for two months.
The family was travelling from the Indonesian city of Surabaya, and was supposed to go to Singapore in order to renew their visas.
Unfortunately, just moments after the AirAsia plane took off, it disappeared after a request to alter its path due to bad weather.
"When I heard the news [about the AirAsia flight], I was very sad," said Lee Jang-ho, a Presbyterian pastor in Seoul who was also a missionary in Malang between 1988 and 1996.
The 54-year-old Lee said he plans to return to the Indonesian town when he retires as pastor.
