How did Scott Morrison’s party win the opposition’s unlosable election?
Scott Morrison came out the victor of what was termed the ‘unlosable election’ for the opposition party. Many watched on live television to see votes tallied, expecting a landslide defeat, which not only polling trends, but even betting agencies had predicted. However, there was bewilderment as Mr. Morrison’s party defied the odds to gain 76 seats to win an outright majority government.
Of course, there has been a frenzy of speculation this week to determine where it went wrong for the opposition in particular. Media covered everything from voter dislike of certain policies, the reformational approach, to the likability of candidates and more. So, is the mystery solved?
“I believe in miracles!” Do you?
Mr. Morrison on election night, after being pronounced the victor, promptly stated his winning recipe. His opening words on live TV before the nation were: “I believe in miracles.” He acknowledged his limitations and God’s intervention. And he ended his declaration of victory saying “God bless Australia.” He was then asked by a reporter what he was doing the following day, on the Sunday. He said he would “go to church as usual” and then to watch some Rugby afterwards.
Friends, do we simply celebrate we have a godly prime minister and lessons on better campaigning or is the win a sign of a greater heavenly reality? Isaiah chapter 55 opens by inviting all to come to a banquet table. We are encouraged to buy bread without money. In other words receive God’s blessing of salvation and his spiritual inheritance, all by grace alone. It appears Mr. Morrison though busy campaigning, found time to fellowship with God at his banquet table.
Astonishing Blessings are to be had by feasting at God’s banquet table.
Isaiah 55 speaks of spiritual hunger and thirst with a purpose. As we take to heart God’s words he wants to make “an everlasting covenant,” with all and give the same ‘sure mercies’ promised to David. What are they? In essence, this covenant speaks of being endowed with splendour to be made God’s witness, leader and commander for nations, for God’s eternal kingdom. In a nutshell this kingdom has two interesting traits. It has universal rule and it endures forever. See Psalm chapter 89 and 2 Samuel chapter 7 which speak of an everlasting kingdom to David and his son, which alludes to Messiah.
So how does this relate to us as God’s children? We as spiritual seed in Christ inherit this promise. Do you want to see the enduring and supreme influence of God kingdom in this world and not just in the after-life? Do you want your life, church, business or organisation lasting, never lacking, supernaturally sustained and always growing? God can make you a witness as He supplies all things needed: The finances, work, creativity, the staff and right people, each time. How good is that in the uncertain times we live in, especially when many oppose you?!
How do we experience this promise in practice? Jesus said: “Seek first his kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.” The essence of this is being authentic, something Mr. Morrison was commended for. Is it possible his trust in God secured the sure mercies of David? Interestingly, Mr. Morrison on Election Day was heralded to be forever remembered as a part of the pantheon by his party peers. Does this remind you of the Davidic covenant!?
What if you say, “I believe, but I am not seeing the fruits?”
Seek first means putting God’s agenda first. Mr. Morrison could have easily opted to conceal his true colours, especially due to anti-Christian sentiment. Instead, he trusted and experienced God’s splendour.
Did he just stay at home the last week of campaigning and pray? No! Absolutely not! He has been credited for working very hard and persevering to his maximum capacity. For example, he made huge volumes of calls and connected with grass root voters, right up until Election Day. This is the active faith the bible is talks about.
What miracle do you need to see today?
Friends, be encouraged I believe God is showing us something. Isaiah 55 was written not just for Jews who had been in exile a while, and were becoming materialistic like the Babylonians, and needed to be reminded of the greater blessings. The truth is these things are written for us all, his children. Spiritual hunger is the precursor to become his witness and miracle worker.
So, what is the next step to see unprecedented wins in your life and circumstances? The disciples asked Jesus about prayer because they saw his witness and mighty works daily. He told them about his prayer life: “Our father,” He said, who is in heaven… Your kingdom come…” Jesus is the model son; start intentionally seeking God for your kingdom purpose.
I look around me today and rejoice to see many people saying what Mr. Morrison says: “I believe in miracles.” They too are experiencing God’s splendour, becoming people of great influence, with following and trend setting in church, arts and entertainment, government, media, business etc…Isaiah chapter 55 says becoming a ruler is a result of the covenant: “You will summon nations you know not and nations you do not know will come running to you.”
Friends, be encouraged that this is a powerful new season in God where he says “I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild…that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord.”
