The Anglican Dean of Sydney, Reverend Phillip Jensen wrote an opinion piece in the Sydneyanglicans.net saying that the universal significance of motherhood to humanity is a reason to be very thankful to God.
The reverend wrote that mother is the 'first person' to love us and is usually the one who 'loved us the longest and the deepest.' Acknowledging that not all motherhood is so 'idyllic,' he goes on to describe the 'profound' connection between mothers and children.
"A mother's love can still be a byword for right relationship. For mothers are so often self-sacrificial in their devotion to their children," wrote Reverend Jensen.
The saddest consequence of humanity sinfulness, the reverend wrote was "the inability of some women to have children they wish."
"The unfair distribution of the affects of sinfulness makes childlessness particularly painful," he says. "Be it the failure to marry the right man or the medical difficulties in reproduction – the grief of not having children can be intense."
The Dean also wants to protect the dignity of motherhood. He said the best way to do is give thanks to God for them and pray for them.
"The last part of the twentieth century was so negative about mothering that many women felt discouraged and demeaned. But motherhood is too fundamental to human existence to be relegated to second-class for very long," he says. "In a fallen world like ours...it is important that we honour our mothers. The best way to do that is to give thanks to God for them and pray for them."
On Mothers Day, Reverend Keith Garner was handing out some 2000 Telstra phone cards to the needy throughout Sydney – both young and old – to phone their mums on this day. Reverend Garner said that it was important to fix broken relationship, especially on Mothers Day.
"It is important that each of us seeks to restore a damaged or broken relationship, especially on Mothers' Day" Reverend Garner said. "Telstra's generous donation will help children reconnect with their mums and pave the way for a better relationship in the future."
