CAP's 2010 Client Survey reports 66% of people's financial situation had caused depression, up from 32% in 2008 with 84% stating it caused anxiety and stress, up from 45% in 2008. 41% cited relationship breakdown, a large increase since the 2008 figure of 13%.
"With the world still reeling from the GFC, Australians face uncertain financial times. Many were affected directly by company layoffs and with inability to pay debt, home foreclosures and bankruptcies have increased, along with fuel and food prices and sky high personal debt," said Ross Buttenshaw, CAP's National Director.
"With statistics such as these, Christians must rise up and respond to the call of God to meet the needs of the poor and marginalised in our society in a relevant and practical way that also brings the love of God into their lives. We need to follow in the steps of Wilberforce, Booth and others to bring lasting impact to our nation", said Ross.
"As Australia's largest charity provider of free debt management, payment services, and financial education, a partnership with CAP has become a gift to the local church and a great way for them to become involved with meeting this pressing need in their communities - for showing and telling of God's transforming love for people trying to cope with overwhelming debt. Through CAP and the local church, the message today is one of hope and freedom to those overwhelmed by debt and facing a hopeless future", he said.
Receiving no government funding, CAP relies solely on donations, with all donated money providing the services that help poor and needy Australians struggling under the burden of debt. Individuals who donate to the work of CAP are called "Lifechangers"; indeed this is literally the case as CAP's 2010 client survey showed 34% of CAP clients stated that the effect that CAP had on their life was "life transforming", with 57% stating it was a "great help". 66% stated that their faith had increased since becoming involved with CAP.
CAP Money is the charity's educational initiative. As a weekly class run over three weeks it teaches people how to budget and stay in control of their money so they don't fall into the debt trap. The course is suitable for everyone not just people heavily in debt. Over 100 churches have partnered with CAP and trained in delivery of the CAP Money course.
