Burton's latest, "Big Eyes," a biographical drama about Margaret Keane earned a paltry $2.97 million over the weekend, despite receiving positive reviews and being regarded as a thoughtful, thought-provoking and well-acting piece from the director.
The film was apparently no match for the final installment of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," which easily took over the top spot with $41.4 million.
Angelina Jolie's World War II tale, "Unbroken" trails "The Hobbit" with $31.7 million, with Meryl Streep's musical "Into the Woods" following it.
"Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," "Annie," "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,", "The Gambler," "The Imitation Game," "Exodus: Gods and Kings," and "Wild" round up the top 10 films of the weekend, with Burton's latest project falling way short of expectations.
"Big Eyes" drew numbers closer to "The Interview," the latter of which received a very limited theatrical release.
