The internet is abuzz with a panoply of self-help strategies and programmes geared towards accessing and maintaining joy, balance, and peace in one’s life. It cannot be gainsaid that 2020 was an overwhelmingly stressful year for many and as such it is no wonder that millions of people are drawn to the 3,5, 7 or even 10 step programmes guaranteed, if implemented, to make one’s life happier and more peaceful.
Make Jesus Christ the Centre of it All
Most people are striving to have a life of peace and bliss (however they perceive it to be) but while many look to best sellers and life coaches for direction and instruction towards this ideal life, we already have the best strategies outlined for us right at our fingertips and from God Himself, in the Bible.
The word of God in Matthew Chapter 6 verse 33 (AMP) reminds us that “But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.
It is clear from the word of God that all good things will be given to us when we strive after God, His Kingdom and His righteousness. Aiming for peace and joy requires striving for Jesus Christ first and foremost, by making Him the centre of our lives.
A similar message is echoed in John Chapter 15 verse 7 (AMP) where Jesus Christ advises His people that “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you [that is, if we are vitally united and My message lives in your heart], ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
Likewise, in John Chapter 16 verse 33 (NLT), Jesus Christ outlines that “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart because I have overcome the world.”
In this verse, Jesus Christ expressly states that peace is to be found in Him. In other words, Jesus Christ is THE source of peace.
Therefore, if you seek peace and joy, the answer is to rest, remain and abide in Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life. Whatever you seek, you will find it in and through Jesus Christ.
Trust in the Lord
Proverbs Chapters 3 verses 5-6 (NLT) directs us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” This is an oft quoted scripture, particularly when it comes to decision making and the directions to take in life.
Trusting in the Lord is critical and fundamental if you are to have peace and joy in your life. As the above passage highlights, trusting in the Lord redounds to your benefit as He will show you which paths to take. The Lord directing your path means that you will need not be anxious, because you have allowed Him to be the captain of your ship and to steer your path. Ergo, you will have peace.
There is therefore no wonder that the word of God in Philippians Chapter 4 verses 6-7 (AMP) admonishes us that “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. 7 And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].”
As Jesus Christ is the source of peace, abiding and resting in Him by trusting in Him will keep anxiety at bay thereby ensuring you peace. Peace that passes all human understanding.
That is why the word of God in Isaiah Chapter 26 verse 3 (AMP) instructs us “You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character], Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation].”
The Source of peace is Jesus Christ. We obtain peace and joy by abiding in Him and trusting in Him.
So, while many best sellers and life coaches may advocate 10 step self-help programmes towards peace and joy; for me there is really just ONE step and His name is Jesus Christ. Look to Him today for your peace and joy.
