Penny Dreadful has undoubtedly been one of Showtime's best horror pieces so far. However, the finale for season 3 also turned out to be the end of the series. And this, more than anything that the show portrayed, has been the biggest horror for fans of the show. While avid followers of the TV tale have been desperately trying to make some sense of the sudden cancellation, the authorities involved in the big game have finally offered some explanation.
According to Digital Spy, Showtime's president of programming Gary Levine opened up about the show's cancellation at the Television Critics Association press tour. The programming head revealed that show's creator John Logan had always planned for a three-season stint. Logan had always meant to end the tale with the death of the central character Vanessa Ives.
But there are people on the main panel who regret the show's last act as much as diehard fans do. Vine Report brought to light that Showtime's CEO David Nevins had wanted the show to expand into further seasons. However, with Logan firm in his belief that there would be no more stories to tell after Ives, the mother of evil, had passed away, there was little Nevins could do. The CEO admitted that pressing on without Logan would have been akin to stepping into the unknown.
It turns out that some of the stars on the show were equally shocked on learning of the show's cancellation. But there are some hopeful reports, or should we say rumors? As Game & Guide points out, speculations suggest that another season may come to pass. There are loose ends to be tied, and the fourth season may be where that happens. Although it may not be the same kind of Penny Dreadful without Ives and Logan, the fourth installment, if it plays out, will certainly be the end of the road.
