A new survey has shown that there has been a huge drop of interest in viewership of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The poll by Gallup was conducted last month among 1,023 adults in the age group of 18 and above, with residents from all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia included in the results.
Gallup has been asking this question since 2000.
Only 48% Americans said that they plan to watch a "great deal" or "fair amount" of the 2016 Summer Olympics, a sharp drop from 59% in 2012, and making Rio the least anticipated games compared to the last four events.
30% of Americans said that they plan to watch "not much" of the Olympics, while 21% answered "none at all."
The lack of interest was reflected when only 17% of Americans correctly identifyied Brazil as this year's host nation.
Another interesting finding was that men and women hold almost the same interest for the games. 49% male and 47% of female want to watch the game. This represents a sharp decline in the interest of females, 63% of which showed interest in watching the 2012 London Olympics.
Gallup speculated viewership may have been affected by the controversy surrounding the games, including concerns about the Zika virus and bad facilities in the Olympic Village.
