Hollywood's go-to action heroine, Scarlett Johansson gets cast in another live-action adaptation; this time for a popular anime series titled Ghost in the Shell.
When talk of the adaptation first started to swirl, it was reported that Wolf of Wallstreet and Hollywood newcomer, Margot Robbie (who has also been cast as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad) would be attached to the role. But apparently, the role has gone to none other than Marvel's Black Widow, Johansson.
Allegedly, Johansson was offered the role as far back as October of 2014. The anime is premised on a cyborg character named Motoko Kusanagi, a member of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, which is a covert ops unit that fights cyber crime in the future.
Fans of the original source material are of course left to wonder why the role couldn't have gone to an Asian actress, but nevertheless are hopeful that this live-action adaptation of the beloved anime will work. Rupert Sanders of Snow White and the Huntsman is set to direct, which seems to be a big plus for avid readers given his eye for visuals and imagery.
Despite an A-list actor's attachment to the role, the project under DreamWorks, has yet to be given a green light—but it will definitely help with its chances of moving forward.
The actress is best known for her work in Avengers, playing Natasha Romanov/ Black Widow--a former Russian spy now working for the covert operations, SHIELD. Her roster of action films also include the more recent sci-fi movie, Lucy.
