Spain dispatched of an impressive Germany 1-0 in the semi finals in which most people thought Germany would win after they disposed of Argentina and England in the lead up. However a fantastic display of keeping possession enabled Spain to reach their first ever World Cup final.
Holland were Spain's opponents in the Final with both teams never before winning the tournament. The Dutch have however made 2 previous finals, loosing both. This meant a new winner and 2 countries both desperate to take home the biggest prize in World Football.
The game started out fiery with both teams receiving yellow cards early. It was hard to say who had the better of the game with both teams also having chances. Spain dominated midfield as expected however the Dutch weren't to be outdone and created arguably the best chance of the game with Robben somehow finding the foot of the Spanish keeper. It was a great save and one that Holland will look back on as a match turning point.
After 90 minutes there was no clue as to who could go on with it and win it with a stalemate in process. As the changes were made by both teams the final went into extra time with 15 minute halves and then penalties if no goals were scored. Then in the 116th minute (4 minutes to go) Spain's Iniesta scored a great goal to seal Spain's history and sending the country in to mayhem.
There was no way back for Holland and their players and fans looked dejected. It's a long time to wait again before another go at the Cup.
Spain's country was in party mode and the players are now set to get an open top bus tour of Madrid on their return. Spain have dominated European football in the last 2/4 years and now have the major prize to seal their position as Europe's Elite.
A Well-Being Australia theologian noting a point to ponder says that "Christians in Sport UK" stated aim is to reach the world of sport for Christ and obviously they are big on soccer (in the UK it's called Football). Their terrific web site is listed for your interest. http://www.christiansinsport.org.uk/
