The much hyped question about Elena Gilbert's return for the final season of the Vampire Diaries took a new turn with rumors saying the character may return for a flashforward.
There are strong speculations that Nina Dobrev is coming back to the series for a guest appearance. She left the show in season 6 after her character was put to eternal sleep, never to awake as long as her best friend Bonnie was alive.
It is still a debated topic what role she would be playing when she returns in the upcoming season, with some speculating she will come back as a doppelganger, as the main villain, or only appear in flashforwards.
CW President Mark Pedowitz has spoken about Elena reprising her role one final time.
"There are discussions going on with Nina, we'd love to have her back...These are discussions that go on, hopefully she'll be back," he revealed at Television Critics Association summer press tour. "But should it not work out, Julie has planned out a great series finale for fans."
Showrunner Julie Plec has already conveyed her wish to cast Dobrev in the finale of the show and told Entertainment Weekly last year that the star will be back to do her required part in the end.
Her return will see fans witnessing ex-flame Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore, reunite with her.
Aside from Nina who will soon be seen in the movie xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Sarah Salvatore (Tristin Mays) is also going to make a comeback. Rumors say that she is going to prompt Damon to turn from the dark side.
Klaus may also land up in Mystic Falls during Stefan and Caroline's wedding to create drama. But the surprising rumor here is that Caroline might choose Klaus over Stefan and move to spinoff show 'The Originals'.
The 8th and final season of TVD will air on October 21 on The CW.
