For the past 15 years or so I have chosen a single word for the New Year ahead. It is usually a word that represents a goal, focus or dream for the year ahead. If you haven’t done so before I encourage you to choose a word and ask your friends and family to join in too.
It has spread near and far within my circle of friends and family and we now look forward to asking each other what our words are and what we hope the direction of this new year will be.
This year my word is: surrender.
I think the full meaning of this will reveal itself throughout the year, but some initial thoughts include;
Surrendering to the rhythm and flow of life. Accepting the current season and therefore fully surrendering and embracing the present moment. Surrendering the soul realm of mind, will and emotions and renewing them according to God’s word.
I am reminded of the hymn written by Judson W. Van DeVenter:
“I surrender all. I surrender all. All to thee my blessed saviour, I surrender all.”
Surrender by Jo Fuller
Accept and embrace life’s current.
Drift delicately over the waves and enjoy the quiet waters.
Breathe deeply through the turbulent times, knowing this too shall pass.
When we try and fight against the current, everything is a struggle.
Even the joyful times can be missed.
But when we embrace life’s current, each present moment is truly felt.
When we float and rise and fall with the waves, even rough waters become less threatening.
But if we are constantly fighting against the current, we quickly run out of breath and face drowning.
Rather, we must let go, look above and fix our thoughts on our Maker.
Then we can ride the storm and know there are calmer waters ahead.
Not dwelling on the past storms ensures we can enjoy the calm and be filled with hope and joy with what lays ahead; whether still or storm.
When we embrace the current, rest and refreshment can be found in the waters.
You find your rhythm, your flow and life becomes a beautiful adventure with the One, our Creator.
I pray your year is an abundantly blessed year filled with deep revelation of his unconditional love and His peace that passes all understanding.
