Speaking to the thousands who had gathered at the Australian Technology Park, Sydney, on Thursday, the mathematics professor and Christian apologist explored the concept behind 'success', saying that the idea of obtaining it was "elusive."
"I find that again and again...people who have reached the top - and everybody else thinks they're magnificently successful - will turn to me and say 'what do I do now?', 'where do I go from here?'"
"We feel we're never quite there," he said.
So the question is not on success, Dr Lennox explained, but instead it is a question of meaning.
"We humans invent things with purposes - we can understand them on surfboards, Xboxes, televisions, iPads..."
"We understand what they are for, but we never stop to ask what we are for."
"What are you for?" he challenged the attendees to consider. "Is there an instructor who designed you?"
Dr Lennox then revealed that the rise of modern science in the 16th-17th century was in fact a direct result of belief in God.
"The reason we can do science is because the universe out there and [our] minds were created by the same intelligence."
Which led him to ask: "[So] am I just an eczema on the face of the cosmos...or am I an image bearer of the Creator that made the universe?"
The heart of the problem, he explained, was how people measured their self value.
"Our feelings of failure start when we think we've got no value," he said, giving an example of not getting a job promotion.
Dr Lennox, who has debated prominent atheist figures including Richard Dawkins, went on to exhort the listeners to look at themselves as creatures of God.
"That gives you a dignity that you'll find in no other philosophy."
Therefore, he continued, "the greatest fear should not be fear of failure, but fear of succeeding at things that don't matter."
"The question we need to ask is 'what is it that really matters?' - You matter."
"But you matter as a person made in the image of God, made for God," he said.
"[So] if you're not enjoying that relationship, you've missed the central purpose of your existence."
Real success, Dr Lennox concluded, will never be experienced apart from God.
"I've gotten to know the Creator of the universe, and I've come to discover that He loves me...that's enough for me."
