Matthew Thornton is studying at the University of Auckland, Matthew finds that writing is one of the prime ways he connects with and grows closer to God. He loves seeing the way in which God has wired everyone uniquely and finds immense fulfilment in seeing others discover who God is to them. • Discovering joy

At high school I remember studying The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. Written post-WWI, it reveals the fragmentation and devastation caused by the Great War. In particular, it reflects the ‘disillusionment’ felt by many during that time, a worldview known as modernity.

  • Transformation: Leave it to Jesus

I think that one of the most discouraging aspects in our quest to “make disciples” (Matthew chapter 28, verse 19) is the lack of ‘results’.

  • If only you knew

In July, my family and I returned to South Africa for the first time since moving over to New Zealand (6 years ago). I’ve written about my experiences before and how it has shaped me as a person. So, going back was special.

  • Finding freedom

Recently I was asked to share at my church’s youth camp. The topic was an easy one: how has Jesus impacted your life?

  • You are more

God’s grace and mercy has been on my mind a lot lately.

  • Love, more than a feeling

It goes without saying that globalisation and social media have changed the world as we known it.

  • He will lift you up

Feeling inadequate, deficient, or plainly unqualified are feelings I’m sure many of us can relate to.

  • Finding ‘life and life at its fullest’

I don’t know about you, but commitment can be hard in the world we live in today.

  • Go and see the stars

A few weeks ago, I went on a weekend trip to a small NZ town called ‘Mangakino’ located on the North Island.

  • Discovering your calling

I think the topic of ‘calling’ has caused many Christians grief over the years.
