Originally started in England a few years ago, this initiative was discussed by UCB Australia in late 2006, said Karyn Markwell, the communications officer of UCB Australia, and it came into fruition in 2007.
The concept of the program, as explained on the UCB Australia website, drew inspiration from the battle between David and Goliath. David, the youngest in his family, is a shepherd boy who comes from the 'outback' of his nation to defeat Goliath, a professional soldier.
Applying this biblical message in a modern-day context, organisers of the program believed after seeking God's direction for 2008, it was decided, by them, that prayer was needed to set free the nation from these 'giants' and discover the better alternatives given by the Lord.
The website stated: " God said he has plans for us that are for good and not for evil, but often we see 'giants' and are afraid to step up and step in to His promises. After seeking the Lord for His direction for this year, we believe that we need to pray into these key areas to bring release from these 'giants' and discover what God has provided as a better alternative."
"Essentially, it is a prayer network," Ms. Markwell said. "The prayer topics are selected by the executives through discussion and prayer. We also receive letters and calls informing us what to pray for."
The 12 areas are as followed, in chronological order: Abandoning our Christian heritage (January), Family Problems (February), Abuse (March), Popular Culture (April), Alternative Lifestyle (May), Illness (June), Bioethics (July), Fear (August), Terrorism (September), Spiritual Strongholds (October), False Beliefs (November), and Financial Problems (December).
UCB Australia received positive feedback last year, she said, and is continuing the program this year.
