The traditional ANZAC test match will hold extra significance this year following the loss of so many lives in the devastating earthquake in Christchurch.
It will also be a big night for a number of Australian and New Zealand debutants taking to the test match field for the first time.
Australia is counting on the new look team to regain some pride following its humiliating 4 point loss to the Kiwis in the Four Nations final in November. Likewise, New Zealand will be hoping to overcome a 14 year losing streak in ANZAC test matches.
An important factor supporting a victory for New Zealand will be that 13 of the 17-man squad were part of the four nations win over Australian in November, while Australia's team has many more new faces.
To make matters worse for the Australians, late yesterday afternoon North Queensland Cowboys centre, Willie Tonga, was called into the camp following reports Justin Hodges had experienced back spasms. At the time of writing, it was not clear if this was a precautionary move by the Australians or a replacement.
The other rugby league match to be played on the same night is the traditional City Country clash.
For the first time in many years, the match could play an important role in determining the New South Wales State of Origin team as the Australian team only boasts an embarrassing 4 New South Wales players.
The poor representation of New South Wales in the test team will ensure the out-dated City Country clash remains for at least the next 12 months.
