In a recent newspaper publication, Kevin Andrews, the Federal Immigration Minister said that Australia had a Judeo-Christian heritage, and this was a fact. This had caused a negative reaction in the Muslim communities.
Jim Wallace, the ACL managing director, said that Judeo-Christian values have helped shape the nation of Australia and this legacy should be acknowledged by people who wish to become citizens.
"If we are to expect immigrants to subscribe to Australian values it would seem obvious that they should know where they come from, on what worldview they are based," Mr. Wallace said.
Mr. Wallace goes on saying that the Judeo-Christian values have been an integral part of the nation's very successful system of government and society and Australians should not be ashamed of it. He also questioned their motives as to why they wanted to change the Australia's value system which was based on this heritage.
"The failure to acknowledge our Judeo-Christian heritage is a real source of tension in Australia today as people instead take it upon themselves to reinvent the basis of our value system to suit their own agenda," Mr Wallace said.
