James Cameron's insanely successful Avatar hit theaters in 2009. And it's been over six years now, which is a terribly long time for a sequel to happen. But Cameron has his reasons.
Movie News Guide reports that the 61-year old movie maker apparently overwrote the original script for Avatar 2. Also, where there were only three sequels that were to follow the 2009 blockbuster, there now are four.
According to Vine Report, if no further delays take place, the next movie in the franchise is slated for a December 2018 release. The remaining three movies are likely to follow in 2020, 2022, and 2023. Of course, a rescheduling of these dates is extremely probable.
The plot of Avatar 2 will move focus from Jake Sully and Neytiri, and will instead revolve around Colonel Miles Quaritch. Actor Stephen Lang, who plays Quaritch, revealed that although Cameron had hinted at the character's resurrection following his death in the first installment, he hadn't really believed it to be true. Now, the actor is mostly grateful for all the love that his character won. He believes that this played a huge role in Quaritch coming back.
Lang, who also plays Cable in the sequel of Deadpool, is rumored to be planning to set aside that part in order to focus more on Avatar 2.
Actress Sigourney Weaver, who played the role of the xenobotanist Grace Augustine in the first movie, is reportedly reprising her role in the sequel. Fans believe that Augustine may turn out to be the bad guy in the upcoming movies.
The shooting for the remaining four movies in the franchise are rumored to be taking place simultaneously, and we can only hope that there's no more rescheduling. 2018 is already a long enough wait.
