Showing superb early season form, Evans chased down Alberto Contador in the gruelling final 'Mur de Huy' (Wall of Huy) climb to snatch victory from last year's Tour de France winner in the final 100m.
It was Evans' first win since taking possession of the world champion's rainbow jersey which he won in a magnificent fashion on the streets of Mendrisio in Switzerland last September.
Evans' then went on to compete in the last of the Ardennes Classics, Liege-Bastogne-Liege on Anzac Day finishing in the top ten behind Kazakhstan's Alexandre Vinokourov and Alexandr Kolobnev, first and second and Spain's former two-time winner Alejanro Valverde, of Caisse d'Epargne, who finished third.
Evan's focus will now shift towards next month's Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) and then onto the World Championships in Geelong, Victoria on September 30, where Beijing Olympic team-mate Michael Rodgers believes he and road world title holder Evans have the ability to be among the medals in the time trials.
The Rainbow jersey worn by Evan's is a distinctive jersey worn by the reigning world champion in a bicycle racing discipline. The jersey is predominantly white with five horizontal bands of colour around the chest. From the bottom up the colours are: green, yellow, black, red and blue; the same colours that appear in the rings on the Olympic flag.
The jersey helps make a world champion easier to spot for spectators. The tradition is applied to all cycling disciplines, including road racing, track racing, BMX, and the disciplines within mountain biking.
The visibility of the rainbow is a symbolism not lost on Christians. God in Genesis created the very beautiful and visible rainbow as a sign of the covenant he made with Noah, his sons and all life on earth.
"This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds...whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind." Genesis 9:12-15
Every time the rainbow appears after the rain it reminds us of the changeless, steadfast nature of God and his promises, in a culture where promises and commitments that are meant to endure are made and broken all too quickly.
