The 'Caldera' restaurant is staffed by students whose course requires they have practical experience in both 'front of house' work and in the kitchen. As a result, their standards are extremely high and the restaurant has attained a superb reputation within the district.
"The Art Ministry initiated an agreement with Kingscliff TAFE last year to place works of art in the Caldera restaurant and one aspect was to provide fresh art work each term of the academic year," noted Mark Tronson. "So it is my joyful duty to select new paintings each term."
"Because of the discerning clientèle that visit the Caldera, we wish to show the variety of the work produced by the ministry, and so we exhibit various types of art and different canvas dimensions," M V Tronson explained. "Of course, we also want to maintain a standard of art work that is commensurate with the high quality of the food and service the TAFE students provide!"
During this first term, the major foyer painting is a large canvas by Tronson du Coudray depicting the 'Sunlander' which has been the Queensland Railways major name train since the 1950's.
Mark Tronson has replaced that art work with 'Party'. Diane Nance-Kivell the head teacher of the Kingscliff TAFE's International School of Hotel, Catering and Tourism Management was thrilled with 'Party', saying the painting was splendid for the foyer.
Foyer art work, claims M V Tronson, needs to resonate with restaurant patrons, TAFE students and staff.
"We had the 'Sunlander' painting hanging last January in an Art Ministry exhibition at the nearby Mantra on the Sea Resort," M V Tronson recalled. "We found it remarkable that many patrons enjoying the summer break there, spoke of having ridden on the 'Sunlander': it made an excellent discussion point.
"The art piece 'Party' it seems might well have as much impact as did 'Sunlander' at the Caldera foyer."
