You've heard of people being unfairly deemed as not physically attractive enough for certain professions, but have you heard of individuals being labeled as too good looking for a role?
People's Sexiest Man Alive and Australian actor Chris Hemsworth had to overcome that opinion of him when he played an internet genius and hacker in Michael Mann's flick Blackhat.
Hemsworth shared with Yahoo Movies that he questioned Mann on whether or not he fit the physical profile of a hacker. "He said the demographic is no longer the cliché version that we once imagined," said Hemsworth. "Hacking exists across all sections of our society, from the math world to the criminal world to the social world."
The buff actor even offered to sport glasses for the role, but Mann disagreed. "I could've worn glasses," Hemsworth laughingly said. "But Mann said, 'Oh come on, why would he wear glasses?'"
The internet even got mad that Hemsworth was chosen to play the role. A blogger slammed hackers as the "world's least sexy profession" and said that "Hollywood is trying to sell me this Chris Hemsworth as a badass hacker thing, and I am just not buying it."
"I used to love Michael Mann films, but it has been a long time since he's done anything decent," someone else commented. "The casting of this is a huge warning sign that he doesn't have any juice left. The notion that ANY skilled hacker is a hot, ripped, athletic jock is laughable, nevermind the world's best blackhat hacker. It is everything hackers are not and basically goes against their lifestyle and everything they believe in. Casting Hemsworth reeks of some package deal and the studio not having faith in Mann to cast how he wanted to."
However, Hemsworth is not the first good-looking star to play a computer whiz, since Angelina Jolie has taken that on in the 1995 film Hackers.
The film Blackhat is slated for release on January 16, 2015.
