Everton needed to win if they were to have any hope of scraping into the top four, however it wasn't to be as they still battle for 5th place with Spurs.
Chelsea ended their premier league title bid with a disappointing 0-0 home draw with relegation doomed Norwich City. Chelsea could still mathematically win the league, but it looks extremely doubtful with only 1 game left on Sunday. The Royal Blues were lacklustre as Norwich threw everything at staying in the Premier League. Norwich are now 2 points short of safety and have played a game more than Sunderland and look set to play in the Championship next season.
In the relegation scrap, Fulham and Cardiff both were relegated on Saturday. Fulham for the first time in over a decade and Cardiff only lasted 1 season in the top flight. Fulham were disappointing in their 4-1 win away at Stoke, whilst Cardiff weren't much better, losing 3-0 away at Newcastle.
Sunderland look like they have pulled off the great escape, this time winning 1-0 at a disappointing Manchester United. United without a manager had many great chances, however Sunderland scored early and were good value for their 3 points. Sunderland have now beaten Chelsea, United and drew with City all away to pull off a remarkable and unlikely relegation escape.
They are now just 1 point away with a game in hand to guarantee Premier League football next season.
Other fixtures on the weekend saw Swansea loose 1-0 to Southampton who capped off a great season finishing 8th. Aston Villa won 3-1 to ensure they stayed in the top flight and were not involved in the relegation battle on the last day of the season.
West Ham pulled off a fantastic 2-0 derby win over Spurs whilst Arsenal guaranteed 4th place and a champions league birth, with a comfortable 1-0 win at home over West Brom.
In the domestic league in Australia, Brisbane Roar took out the 2014 A League Grand Final in extra time with a 2-1 victory over Western Sydney Wanders in Brisbane, claiming their 3rd title in 4 years.
