Don’t Talk, Just Listen

By Laura Murphy - Press Service International

One afternoon I went to the beach and was laying in the sunshine, breathing deeply and reflecting deeper.

I was looking for some well-needed headspace and the ocean has always been a soother to my soul (without fail).

My thoughts were scrambled; cluttered with doubts about the future and cloudy with the fog of unresolved pain and hurt. I thought in those moments that the best way to address the spinning of my head was to stop focusing on myself, so I began to thank God for His beautiful creation.

Suddenly, I heard the Lord say, “Be quiet.”

Slightly confused yet intrigued, I sat, emptying my thoughts onto the sand, listening for something else.

“Be quiet. Don’t talk, just listen. There are some things I want to tell you.”

In those next few moments – whether it was 1 minute or 20, I can’t recall – the presence of God showed up; realer and stronger than the waves of the sea or the beachside breeze.

His ever-closeness and depth overwhelmed me, and I felt so much shifting and healing in things I couldn’t even begin to articulate.

He spoke to me with thoughts and words and He spoke to my heart things that I will never know. Things that lift and encourage somehow, but are kept as secrets between God’s Spirit and yours, leaving your mind out of it.

Anyway… Where was I? Oh, yes…

Silent and still, I listened and listened to the whispered words of the Lord, soon after penning them into a poem.

So, after that long introduction, here we have a creative result of this encounter with God. Let the Holy Spirit wash over you and speak His precious secrets to your heart.

No. 13 - There are some things I want to tell you

I made this for you, for this very day

The ocean has never moved like this before and it will never again

Through the ages of time, my throne has held reign

Over every hill, every cavern, every well, every plain

Every sea is a show of miraculous love

Each wave, a proof that I AM enough

I cover every wound and fill up empty space

I wash out your lungs and send all shame away

I move with the wind and I shine out of daybreak

With each storm and each sunrise, the cold and dead rise and wake

I refused to abandon you to the life you deserved

and instead I came running with love that's unearned

I filled your coffin with fresh air and light

I took what was meant for your death and brought you new life

Your deathbed is now but daisies and tulips

Your old grave has sprouted forth fruit, truth and music

I want you to know that I'm here and I'm close

and that in every situation there is reason to hope

I'm moving and working in ways you cannot quite see

but in your confusion put full faith in me

I see every effort and hold every cry

Joy and peace are abundant, just look into my eyes
