Though the Dominican Republic does not allow same sex marriages, a man and his partner have wed in the British Embassy, the first to take place in the country.
According to British law, same sex marriages are permited in England, Wales and Scotland. The identity of the two men were not disclosed but the British Embassy said it was between a British man and a Dominican man.
Despite the message by the British Embassy in Dominican Republic that the government respects the ceremony of the two men, Dominican Republic Foreign Ministry spokesman Miguel Medina said that same sex marriages are not allowed in their country. He said, "Our legislation does not recognize this type of marriage."
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Dominican Council of Evangelical Churches comments about this marriage as "a curse to the nation."
British Embassies in 25 countries including as Australia, China, Japan, and Russia have allowed gay marriages to take place since June, however this is only given to British nationals who are not allowed to marry under the local law and that local officials gave permission to perform a consular marriage.
