The Herald Sun reported Father Peter Hansen a close friend of Kim Nguyen delivered a sermon beginning with condemnation which slowly evolve to a message of repentance. He said: “There was a period of Van’s life when he was not a virtuous man. Individuals are able to turn their lives around…to atone, to seek forgiveness, to repay a debt.” The Catholic Leader reported the Gospel reading chosen by Father Hansen is that of the repentant thief.
Nguyen conversion to Catholicism came after the chaplain sang ‘Ave Maria’ which he heard was so ‘single and pure in voice.’
In his last diary entry two hours before the execution the Herald Sun reported the diary was filled with love for his brothers and sisters. It also reveals his deep faith and love in the Lord who provide solace for him in his hour of need.
Here are some of the excerpts from Nguyen diary:
“I am returning to the Lord now. He loves us all so much. He’s always been there. It is we who need to love Him.”
“Please don’t be sorry but instead celebrates the life God has made possible through His love.”
“Be of great faith; of greater courage and firm heart.”
“May God continue to bless you. May His light shine upon you. May He grant you peace and bring you to everlasting life. Amen.”
