The AFL has strict rules and regulations on the trading of players. But there is a new philosophy by clubs to pick players. Once upon a time clubs wanted the best player for the job. They looked for someone who could deliver on the field. This old paradigm meant personality flaws or troubles were overlooked. They might cause grief off the field but this was the price to be paid because they would get the results on the field. Things have changed. Club scouts and coaches now look at the "whole" player. This obviously includes looking at their football credentials but it expands much further. The player's interaction at their old clubs is examined: were they a teachable player, eager to learn? How did the player interact with his fellow teammates? Was he a solo star or a team player? What is the player's family background and will he need any extra support? What are his outside footy career aspirations and study options? Is he a man who likes a drink, and has this caused him any trouble in the past? These and many other factors show a shift in the way players are sought and traded. We have seen a shift in the type of players we see in the modern game today. Once we saw giant personalities dominating the club and the game. Now we see young introverts playing great footy. Once we saw clubs spending a lot of time dealing with alcohol issues. Now we see clubs proactive in educating new players and caring for players with a tendency to get into trouble. The AFL clubs and the AFL Players' Association have moved the paradigm forward and made a big difference for the game and the players.
Some players made big moves over trade week:
Chris Tarrant left Collingwood F.C. four years ago. Now he returns ready to contribute to the Magpies 2011 defence. Geelong assistant coach Brendan McCartney has moved to Essendon adding to Geelong's other big name departures Gary Ablett jnr (Gold Coast) and coach Mark Thompson (undecided future). Essendon forward Bachar Houli looks set to move to Richmond.
Other players missed out and live in the post season limbo:
Andrew Walker was rumored to be moving to Adelaide but no deal has been done. Paul Bevan from Sydney wanted a move but nothing has developed.
Well-Being Australia Theologian is reminded that we all have many areas to our lives: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. We are not just flesh and blood but grow in all of these different areas. Jesus, as a boy, is said to have grown in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men (Luke 2:52). As we hear about all the trading of players and consider all the reasons, remember that we are of value to God because of Jesus. As a result of His love we can grow "in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men."
