The American Iranian, who was sentenced to eight years prison for building home church communities and orphanages, has told his family that he now fears for his life.
"Killing Pastor Saeed within Iran, which has publicly opposed ISIS, would provide a monumental victory for these murderous terrorists," Jordan Sekulow, the Executive Director of the American Center for Law & Justice, said.
Despite being held in a separate section of the Rajai Shahr prison, the IS members have occasionally made their way to Abedini's ward, forcing him to remain only in his cell, the ACLJ reported.
The 34 year old has also been targeted by al Qaeda terrorists in the same prison.
"He is now essentially a prisoner within his own prison cell," Sekulow said.
According to the International Christian Concern, the government had initially approved the "humanitarian project" Abedini had been working on at the time of his arrest. However, he was later sentenced to eight years for "crimes against the national security of Iran".
Sekulow has renewed calls asking the US Government to protect Abedini and bring him home.
"He doesn't deserve this. His family doesn't deserve this. But now his life is in extreme danger. It's time to bring him home."
Thousands are expected to participate in worldwide prayer vigils on September 26, which will mark 2 years since his imprisonment.
