Wigan were 2nd last at the start of the day and needed a win to have any chance of staying alive for next season. They started well and scored to win 1-0. This meant they had to wait for other results to stay in the league and they got their reward as other teams dropped points. Wigan had a great run of form at the right time to ensure another season in England's Elite.
Birmingham City started the day outside the drop zone and needed a win to guarantee their survival however faced a tough trip to Tottenham. Spurs spoiled the day however for the midlands club and scored late on to relegate Birmingham in a mixed season that saw City lift the Carling Cup and get into Europe.
Blackpool also started in the bottom 3 and needed a win to keep their faint hope alive but had the toughest test with a trip to Manchester United. Blackpool battled well and were ahead early in the 2nd half after 2 great goals. The dream only lasted for minutes as United scored to eventually come out 4-2 winners and send Blackpool straight back to the Championship.
That meant that Blackburn and Wolves result didn't matter and luckily so for Wolves as Blackburn raced to a 3-0 win at Wolves. Wolves however came out at half time with a different attitude and brought the scoreline back to 3-2. This result ensured both clubs lived to see another season.
In other matches Chelsea sacked Anchelotti as Everton won at home. Aston Villa beat Liverpool 1-0 whilst Manchester City capped an impressive season with a 2-0 win at Bolton. Fulham and Arsenal drew 2-2 whilst Sunderland thumped West Ham 3-0.
