When I was much younger, one of my favourite songs was one called me “Me, Myself and I” by megastar Beyonce Knowles. I knew that song word for word and would sing it practically every day like an anthem.
At the time, I was not familiar with or had experienced the heartbreak that the song referenced but somehow the theme and idea of being your own best friend and having not to depend on another for the comfort and security that comes from a close relationship, was quite compelling to me.
I felt a strong sense of empowerment stating and believing that I will be my own best friend. Coupled with that was also a constant desire to be self-sufficient and not wanting to rely on anyone.
Not meant to be alone
Happily, I found Jesus Christ years later and learnt that a life of “Me, Myself and I” is a life of pain, distress and unhappiness. You see, as human beings, we were not meant to be alone and to go at life by ourselves. That is the very reason from the very beginning of time, God thought it fit to create Eve, just so Adam could have a companion.
Indeed, in the Genesis Chapter 2 verse 18 ESV, it states that ““It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him”. Further at verses 21-22 ESV, “So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man”.
God is always with us
From the beginning of time therefore, “me, myself and I” was never God’s plan for us. God wants us to form lasting and healthy relationships with others, especially other believers. Most importantly however, the Lord wants us to have a strong and enduring relationship with Him. We know that the Lord is omnipresent and is always with us.
In Zephaniah Chapter 3 verse 17, ESV, we are told that “the Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you with his love; he will exult you over you with loud singing”.
It is quite clear from this scripture that the Lord is with us as we go through our lives. Further, God is so keen on being with us and ensuring that we are never alone, that we can never escape His presence.
His presence is with us
We see this very clearly in Psalm Chapter 139 NLT, verses 7-12 where the author states, “I can never escape from your Spirit!I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there;if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning,if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me,and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide meand the light around me to become night—but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day.Darkness and light are the same to you”.
This scripture vividly expresses and underscores the fact that we are never alone because the Lord God Almighty is always with us.
He will never leave us
Not only is the Lord always with us, He also promises to never leave us nor forsake us. In the book of Hebrews Chapter 13 verse 5 we are remind of this fact thus, “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”
There is security with the Lord, we need not worry nor be anxious because He is with us and will never forsake us. We therefore have no need to be our own best friends and to depend on or resort to “Me, Myself and I”. I feel a peace knowing that I will never walk alone. I feel a great sense of comfort knowing that I will never face a battle by myself.
The next time you feel alone, remind yourself that you are not. If your feel the urge to be self-sufficient and your own best friend, remind yourself that you already have a friend in Jesus who sticks closer than a brother and who will never leave you nor forsake you. You never have to declare “Me, Myself and I” because you always have “Me and My Father, God!!”.
