The letter cited numerous problems faced by the NRL, but focused on the decision to allow Hayne to play in the 2009 grand final despite leading into a tackle with his knees and connecting with another players head.
The decision was allegedly based on the NRL's commercial need to have a superstar play in the grand final, than holding to the ideal of fair play.
The self-imposed exile only lasted until the beginning of the 2010 season when the lure of a great competition was too strong - along with the desire to win the office tipping competition.
Unfortunately, history repeats and the NRL has made the same mistake by allowing Jarryd Hayne to play in game 2 of the State of Origin, despite (clearly) intentionally head butting another player on the weekend.
It is clear the NSWRL believes the future of the game relies on superstar players (like Hayne) taking to the field, no matter the cost, in a vain attempt to 'save' rugby league in NSW.
However their 'too smart by half' decision to let Hayne off the hook does nothing but undermine the very fabric of the sport.
Any self respecting rugby league fan would have to acknowledge the fact that Jarrod Hayne may have the ability to wear the blue jersey on Wednesday night, but he doesn't deserve it.
