The ‘Purpose Driven’ annual church conference held in Sydney, running from the 24th March to the 25th March 2006, is stressing the theme of transforming ‘an unchurched and uncommitted believer’ into ‘a mature believer who fulfilled their ministry in the church and their life’s mission in the world.’
Currently in the church the members are divided into 5 broad categories, which are:
Community: Those living around your church who never or occasionally attends
Crowd: Those who attend your church regularly but are not members
Congregation: Those who are committed to both Christ and membership in your church family.
Committed: Those members who are serious about growing to spiritual maturity
Core: Those members who actively serve in ministry and missions in your church
The aim is to move the members from the community group into the core group. To carry this out, a fresh perceptive is being taught which help participants: “Recognise the different levels of commitment in the church, understand how people need differ at each level and how to lead people to a deeper level of commitment in fulfilling the 5 biblical purposes.”
The 5 biblical purposes are as follow:
Fellowship: Learn the keys of reaching the unchurched for Christ and assimilating them into your congregation.
Discipleship: Learn how to measure spiritual growth in your people and receive a plan for leading them to maturity.
Ministry: Learn how to empower your people for service by helping them identify their unique SHAPE for ministry.
Evangelism: Learn how to enlist people in the worldwide mission of sharing and reproducing their life.
Worship: Learn how to encourage the members of your church to live surrendered, Christ-centred lives.
The two days conference is divided into nine sessions, which encompasses: “How to build a church with purpose, 9 ways to be purpose driven, targeting your community for evangelism, attracting and keeping a crowd, building your congregation, developing mature members, empowering your core for ministry and authentic leadership.”
It is hoped through the sessions and workshops, churches will no longer have to rely on a few factors but rather it can emulate the ‘Purpose Driven’ model by utilising a range of combinations to become a healthy church.
