Is the love of God reckless or relentless? This is a question that has been on my mind a lot since recently.
Sometime ago during the experience of boredom, while completing a task I came across a video on a channel I am subscribed to by Lady Glene, Jamaican worship leader, content creator, Christian Youtuber and author. In the video, she gave, in my opinion, an eye-opening revelation concerning this question, to which I then went on to do my individual research.
As usual, as I seek the answers to the curious questions in my heart as it relates to matters related to or in the church, that are not oftentimes discussed exclusively or not at all.
Inspiration behind thee song ‘Reckless love’
If you are musically knowledgeable, then perhaps by seeing the title, you might be able to think of a song just by some keywords used. In an interview on Bethel music’s youtube channel, the original composer Cory Asbury of ‘Reckless love,’ explained the story behind the song.
Asbury explained that the song is the song of his whole life. He further explained that the phrase reckless love dropped in his spirit about five years prior to 2018, when he started to experience the kindness and goodness of the Father in a way he never experienced before.
Answering the question as to why he use the term ‘reckless” to describe God, in his own words he says, “I see the love of God as something wild insane, crazy, the way that he pursues the way that he chases us down the way that he loves; I believe is reckless. And so we were going after that really furious sort of violent language, to speak to the nature of a love of God that it never backs down, it never gives up.”
Reckless love biblically explained
A quick google search shows that apparently there is not a verse that has the exact words, reckless love in it. However, upon in depth research, there might be some scripture to consider or explore.
1. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John chapter 3, verse 16, NIV).
2. for our sake he made him sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians chapter 5 verse 21, ESV)
3. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (Ephesians chapter 3 verse 19, NLT).
Reckless vs relentless
According to the Oxford dictionary the word reckless means, “showing a lack of care about danger and the possible results of your actions” while the word relentless means, “not stopping; not getting less strong.”
Upon reflection, this article was in no way, shape or form written to jeopardize anyone about their experience or belief but rather from the perspective of a young Christian who uses this platform to express her thoughts on matters concerning the church and to possibly bring a new perspective from that of the bible.
The song Reckless love is beautifully written however, out of curiosity, it leaves the question; based on the meaning and the bible even; is the love of God reckless or relentless?
