Hollywood actor Russel Crowe's film, "The Water Diviner" has been cited as the top grossing local film of 2014 in Australia.
The Australian native stars in the film premised on a father who returns to Turkey after fighting in World War I. The movie was released on December 26 and raked in A$5.65 million (over $4.5 million) by the end of its opening run.
This means the film overtook "Wolf Creek 2" which was consistently at the top of the charts, followed by The Railway Man, released earlier in December.
Note that the film is directed by Crowe and also stars in the movie.
"We are delighted that Australian audiences have responded with such enthusiasm to the film," the head of distribution at eOne entertainment, Mike Baard, MD of Universal Pictures Australia, and Sandie Don and in a statement.
2014 proved to be a less than stellar year for the local box office, with several high profile films turning out to be flops. This year sees a better performance.
