A sudden rise in anti-transgender or transphobic crimes have been recorded by multiple police forces in the United Kingdom, a recent report said.
According to statistics released for the Press Association, there were more crimes targetting transgender individuals from January up to November this year, than the entire 2013.
In the report by Pink News, a third of the entire transgender population in the UK receives 'transphobic' abuse each year, said Serge Nicholson who represents the LGBT group Gallop.
"As much as 80% of transphobia is not reported. So the rise in transphobic police recording can be viewed as encouraging, though it leaves us with mixed feelings. One transphobic hate crime is one too many", said Nicholson.
In spite the total increase in transgender crimes in the UK, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) believes that crimes with such nature are still 'significantly under-reported'.
"We strongly encourage anyone who has experienced transphobic hate crime to report incidents to the police," said Chief Constable Jane Sawyers.
11 police offices in the entire country reported a significant rise in transgender abuse. Police offices in the Metropolitan, Somerset, and Merseyside areas alone have listed 165 transgender-related abuse and attacks during January until November. Last year, that number was only 104.
