Just after Tuesday officially began, British comedian and writer, Stephen Fry, confirmed the announcement of his engagement to 27-year-old Elliot Spencer on social media. Both Mr Fry and Mr Spencer were surrounded by the paparazzi outside Fry's London home when the 57-year-old said that the wedding will be held on an unspecified date in 2015. Both wore matching engagement rings.
After speaking to reporters, the couple drove away to celebrate the engagement. Mr Fry confirmed that an overseas holiday will not occur until after the BAFTA awards ceremony is held in February—he will host the prestigious event for the 10th time this year.
Reporters also managed to speak with the young groom's Southampton-based parents, who shared Fry's celebratory mood. Both parents have met their son's husband-to-be and said on Tuesday: "We are obviously very happy. We are over the moon". According to the Daily Mail, Mr Spencer is reportedly a millionaire through his Hood House Limited home-building company.
Mr Fry was formerly in a long-term relationship with former make-up and vitamin salesman Daniel Cohen, who shared a North London house with the personality for 14 years. Mr Cohen is credited with helping Mr Fry through periods of serious depression, and has been candid about his ongoing struggle after their separation in 2010.
In addition to confirming that he did not receive a seven-figure sum from Mr Fry after their split, Mr Cohen told the media at the time that "nothing can bring Stephen back." His response to Tuesday's announcement was simply: "I have nothing to say."
Mr Fry has expressed gratitude to his fans for their warm congratulatory messages. Meanwhile, the people close to Mr Fry are also pleased about the news, with one unnamed source informing the media that "It's fantastic to see Stephen with a smile on his face again".
